Brannam Pottery was a British studio pottery firm started by Thomas Backway Brannam in Barnstaple, Devon, England, in 1848. In 1867 Thomas’ son, Charles Hubert Brannam (C H Brannam) left school at age 12 to start work at the pottery.

Alexander Lauder was born in 1836. He became the head tutor at Barnstaple School of Art where Charles Hubert Brannam was a pupil. At the age of forty he founded Lauder and Smith with his brother in law W.O. Smith, a factory close to Barnstaple in North Devon. The company made bricks, tiles and terracotta pots, and experimented with art pottery.

A very impressive CH Brannam Barum (Barnstaple) double, twisted handled vases standing 17 inches high. Incised with the date 1892, the initials WB, William Baron, and the number 123. Decorated in greens and browns with a fish among seaweed and with air bubbles rising.

Highly collectable.
